With more than 200 updated and added software packages, the second release candidate of the new MultiMedia Edition ML-5.0.5 is on its way to the download mirrors. Planetmirror
, one of the biggest download mirrors, is as usual the first to provide you with required installation ISO images

Here some release notes and installation instructions:
Initially we had some problems with the huge size of StartCom MultiMedia at the previous release (RC1), which couldn't be burned on regular DVD ROMs. Quickly we released an updated image, which fixed this problem (Thanks to Evan of Planetmirror for the help, pushing the fixed ISO's to all other destinations).
For RC2 (this release candidate), the DVD image for the i386 (Intel - Pentium, AMD - Athlon) architectures can be now burned using regular DVD devices. The x86_64 (AMD - 64 bit) architectures requires however a double layered DVD or an installation via network or harddrive.
We received some great feedbacks, feature requests and some bug reports. In response to that, for which we thank all early testers and helpers, we added more supported file systems to the kernel (namely SMB and NTFS), easier printing of multiple images and kino (video editing) to mention only a few. In all some 200 packages got updated, fixed or added to this release.
As of the RC2, no new features will be added and only updates and fixes are performed for the final release of ML-5.0.5. In case you found a bug, please report with complete details to http://bugzilla.startcom.org
. The final release is scheduled for the 10th of June 2006.
You may download the DVD image and burn the image to a DVD ROM available for download from the ~iso directory. This requires, that you can boot from a DVD device. Burn as usual, insert the DVD and change the settings in the BIOS setup program (if needed). Press <Enter> after the initial screen and the setup program will guide you through the install.
If you already run a form of Linux you can download the DVD image and save it at a spare partition (Don't use the partition you actually want to install ML-5.0.5). Download also the boot.iso, like for network install and point the installer to the DVD ISO image.
CD - Network
The ~os/images/ directory contains the file boot.iso. This file is an ISO image that can be used to boot the StartCom Enterprise Linux installation program. It is a handy way to start network-based installations. To use boot.iso, your computer must be able to boot from its CD-ROM drive, and its BIOS settings must be configured to do so. You must then burn boot.iso onto a recordable/rewriteable CD-ROM.
Disk-On-Key - Network
Another image file contained in the images/ directory is diskboot.img. This file is designed for use with USB pen drives (or other bootable media with a capacity larger than a diskette drive). Use the dd command to write the image.
The ability to use this image file with a USB pen drive depends on the ability of your system's BIOS to boot from a USB device.
